Intro to Improv Quilting: A Faced Modern Wall Hanging Series w/Debbie Clardy

Intro to Improv Quilting: A Modern Faced Wall Hanging Series

No perfect points. No rigid rules. Just color, creativity, and a finished modern wall hanging.

Join us at The Sewcial Box for a 2-part creative quilting workshop led by guest educator Debbie Clardy. This beginner-friendly series introduces students to the playful world of improv quilting, where color, shape, movement, and instinct guide the design instead of a traditional pattern.

Throughout the series, students will create a modern 30" x 30" improv quilted wall hanging and learn how to finish it with a clean faced binding for a polished, contemporary look.

This workshop is designed for beginners to confident beginners who are comfortable using a sewing machine and ready to explore a more relaxed, creative approach to quilting. You do not need to have improv quilting experience to join — just bring your machine, your basic sewing tools, and a willingness to play.

Workshop Dates

This is a 2-part series held on:

Saturday, September 19 10a - 4p
Sunday, September 20 12p - 6p

Because each session builds on the previous one, students should plan to attend all three workshop dates.

What You’ll Make

Students will create an approximately 30" x 30" modern improv wall hanging using a curated class color palette as the starting point. Each student’s finished piece will be unique, personal, and shaped by their own design choices.

The project will be finished with a faced binding, giving the wall hanging a clean edge and modern presentation.

What You’ll Learn

During this series, students will explore:

  • The basics of improv piecing

  • How to create without following a traditional pattern

  • Color, contrast, movement, and shape

  • How to build and arrange improv sections

  • Design decisions for a balanced wall hanging

  • How to work from a basic color palette while adding your own creative touches

  • How to finish a quilted wall hanging with faced binding

Included with Registration

Your registration includes:

  • Both workshop dates

  • Light brunch or lunch each class day

  • Guest educator instruction

  • Curated fabric bundle

  • Design board

  • Guided support from first cuts to final layout

Students are also welcome to bring additional fabrics from home to play off the included palette. This is a great way to add favorite colors, meaningful scraps, extra texture, or personal touches to your wall hanging.
